about

A clear reference to Belgian Surrealist René Magritte’s 1929 work The "Treachery of Images (La trahison des images)", this piece likewise forces the listener to interrogate the complex relationships among word, sound, and funk. The rhythmic cross-hatching, subtle double entendres, and attention to tuning, as well as the evident porcine side-eye, delude us into trusting the false connection between the idea of the animal and its representation. Dependent on linguistic conventions and grounded in a false premise of resemblance, "Sticklers for Specificity" ultimately reveals deeper notions of metacognition, art, and funkiness itself.
